The Federation (also known as Fediverse) is a social network created by the merger of many independent servers. The operators are private individuals, social groups, artists, anarchists and institutions (for example, the EU and a German state television broadcaster are also represented, for those who need it). All these instances can communicate with each other and no matter where you log in, you have access to all the content of all instances. It is decentralized. So it has no central office that could decide anything for the others. Blocking, censoring, monitoring and shadow banning, as people are used to from the commercial US platforms, is simply not possible here. The only thing I miss here is music, the musicians, the bands, the fans. Unfortunately, there is no music player at the moment, but the community will take care of it. For sure. So come on over. There are many instances for different interests or big, public ones where you can just try it out. Like this one:

Musk,Trump and the Federation

I am, for many years, actually since it exists, part of the so-called federated Internet . The goal of this thing is to create an Internet that exists independently of state, nation, and capital. The Snowden revelations and the last “official” Anonymous call to smash the tech giants were certainly the trigger to deal with this. We can only do that in structure, by creating a digital space that is not (so easily) compromised.

That was 10 years ago now and a lot has happened. The so-called Fediverse has become especially popular, and Mastodon in particular. It is only a small part of it, but a very popular one. On the one hand because it is very “Twi**er”-like and on the other hand because Eugen the “father” of Mastodon and his crew (of course it is open source) have developed really great software. Now it happens every few years that there is a “wave” and many people flock there and 99% leave but quickly again, it would not be professional and at all would be missing things that exist in PRISM. So they have not understood the idea behind it at all and obviously don’t want to… it just doesn’t work with pure consumers.

At the moment is probably the biggest wave and it comes almost exclusively from Twi**er. It seems like this is just a fashion on T. and actually has little to nothing to do with the Federation or the Fediverse.

One inevitably wonders about the motivation of these people? Clearly it is triggered by the T. takeover of Musk and because there is fear that Trump could tweet again. But then why the federation? It stands for the fact that everyone can say what they want? Would D. Trump would build such a server (which he probably even tries to do) no one could stop him. And why should they? Are your arguments so weak? That you have to be afraid of foreign thoughts? Can’t you refute them when yours are so noble and right? Sounds like failure to me. Why do you then come to the federated Internet, where it is about tolerating the other? Best of all immediately with “I lock all” shouting.

I already ask myself … why do they come? What do they expect? Are they simple-minded at the end and don’t realize it? Questions about questions.

Musk, Trump und die Föderation

Ich bin ja, seit vielen Jahren, eigentlich seit es das gibt, Teil des sog. föderierten Internets (ich hatte hier davon mal ein VIDEO gemacht). Ziel dieser Sache ist es ein Internet zu schaffen, was unabhängig ist von Staat, Nation und Kapital existiert. Auslöser sich damit zu beschäftigen waren sicher die Snowden-Enthüllungen und der letzte “offizielle” Anonymous-Aufruf die Tech-Giganten zu zerschlagen. Das geht nur in der Struktur, indem wir einen digitalen Raum schaffen, der nicht (so leicht) kompromittierbar ist.

Das ist jetzt 10 Jahre her und es ist viel passiert. Besonders populär ist das sog. Fediverse geworden und da speziell Mastodon. Es ist nur ein kleiner Teil der Sache, aber halt ein sehr populärer. Zum einen, weil es sehr “Twi**er”ähnlich ist und zum anderen, weil Eugen der “Vater” von Mastodon und seine Crew (ist ja natürlich open source) wirklich krass gute Software entwickelt haben. Nun kommt es alle paar Jahre vor, dass es eine “Welle” gibt und viele Menschen da einströmen und 99% gehen aber schnell wieder, es wäre nicht professionell und überhaupt würden Sachen fehlen, die es bei PRISM gibt. Haben also die Idee dahinter überhaupt nicht verstanden und wollen offensichtlich auch nicht.. mit reinen Konsumenten funktioniert das nun mal nicht.

Im Moment ist wohl die größte Welle und die kommt fast ausschließlich von Twi**er. Es scheint so, als wär das gerade ein Mode auf T. und hat eigentlich mit der Föderation oder dem Fediverse nur wenig bis gar nichts zu tun.

Man fragt sich unweigerlich nach der Motivation dieser Leute? Klar ausgelöst ist es durch die T.-Übernahme von Musk und weil Angst besteht, dass Trump wieder Tweeten könnte. Bloß warum dann die Föderation? Die steht doch dafür, dass alle sagen könne was sie wollen? Würde sich D. Trump einen solchen Server bauen (was er wohl sogar versucht) könnte niemand ihn daran hindern. Und warum auch? Sind eure Argumente so schwach? Dass ihr Angst haben müsst vor fremden Gedanken? Könnt ihr die nicht widerlegen, wenn eure doch so edel und richtig sind? Klingt mir nach Versagen. Warum kommt man dann ins föderierte Internet, wo es darum geht den anderen zu tolerieren? Am besten gleich mit “ich sperre alle” Geschrei.

ich frage mich schon .. warum kommen die? Was erwarten die? Sind sie am Ende einfältig und merken es nicht..? Fragen über Fagen.

Freie Software ist Punk

Nachdem ich mich eher als Seiteneinsteiger mit Linux und Freier Software (FOSS) beschäftige, war es für mich ziemlich schwer, die auch auf meinem Server zu installieren. Dabei gibt es so coole Projekte wie Peertube, Mastodon, Diaspora und viel viele mehr. Matrix Chat und Jitsi Meet benutze ich schon länger und es ist nicht mehr wegzudenken und es wird in meinem Freundeskreis aktiv genutzt. Wenn man sich etwas reinarbeitet, kann man die Zwei optimal mit Ansible aufsetzten –> Hier

Für alle anderen ist Yunohost aus Frankreich eine echt unglaublich coole Alternative. Mit nur einem Befehl wird der gesamte Server eingerichtet, Sicherheitseinstellungen vorgenommen und eine Administrationsoberfläche installiert auf der man die tollen Fediverse und FOSS Programme einfach mit einem Klick einrichten kann. Unglaublich.
